How to empty, clean and refill your spa in a few easy steps

Your hot tub or spa is just like a big bathtub, except that you wait some time before pumping out the water.

As more people use it over and over again, both organic and inorganic deposits make the spa water increasingly dirty. Therefore, it is essential to drain and clean your spa.

In general, you should drain, clean and refill your spa every 3-4 months. However, clean more often if the spa is used often and by a larger group of people or if the water has a problem that cannot be fixed by simple cleaning and testing/measuring.

There's more to cleaning your spa than simply draining and wiping with a cleaning solution. Learn more about the benefits of proper cleaning, how it should be done and how the technicians at your local Sundance Spas store can help you with everything from spa repair to routine maintenance like draining and cleaning.

The benefits of emptying and cleaning your spa

Even if you treat, clean and shock your spa water regularly, at some point you will need to replace the water completely. Contaminants such as body oils and lotions, cosmetics, hair products, sweat and dead skin cells enter the water when the spa is used.

These contaminants also enter the pipes and filters and can form a layer of bacteria that is difficult to remove, called a biofilm.

You can only remove biofilm by carefully draining the spa and cleaning it with proper spa and plumbing cleaning products. Your spa is due for service/maintenance when it:

  • Gives off bad odors
  • Has polluted or cloudy water, even after treatment/shocking
  • Used by a lot of people in a short period of time
  • Not used for a long time, such as after winter

Draining your spa

Make sure the spa is disconnected from the power outlet before performing any maintenance work. Start by adding a sanitary cleaner before draining your spa. The cleaner is specially made to break down biofilm build-up in the pipes and filters.

It should sit/circulate for a while (check the package) - let it circulate for a few hours or even overnight before emptying the spa.

You can drain the spa by connecting a hose and letting gravity push the water out, but this can take hours. Alternatively, a sump pump can drain the spa within minutes. Sundance spas have a drain system in the spa for this purpose. The waste water is supposed to go into the sewer system, but some people discharge it into their backyard or yard.

Cleaning your spa

Clean or replace your filter while the tub is draining - rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove cleaning agents.

Spray the bowl with spa cleaner and wash it, paying attention to all nooks and crannies. Remove residue with soft microfiber cloths and rinse all surfaces thoroughly.

You may want to take the opportunity to clean your spa filter, along with other accessories such as the steps or cover. Dispose of the cleaning water in the same manner as dirty spa water.

Refilling your spa

Finally, add fresh water through a hose with a filter to reduce the amount of impurities. Always use high-quality water to reduce the chance of staining and mineral deposits. Stay close to avoid flooding, especially if you have your spa indoors.
